Better foliage mod

Postby ket on 12 Jan 2009 03:59

This is something I'm still working on which will be part of TK, but I'm letting it out at it current build state so people can tell me what they think of these modified textures vs. vanilla.

Darn...I'm not currently setup to try anything right now. Can this be added to any mod that doesn't change landscape textures?
Is this only for on top of vanilla Stalker?

The textures should be fine to use with any mod. Just extract the two files in the archive to gamedata/textures, and thats it :thumbright: One thing I did notice is how the grass textures especially don't look nowhere near as thin on the ground anymore, quite a nice effect IMO. I'll probably end up redoing the textures entirely at some point, I've always absolutely despised how childlike the trees look especially. Even back in the day years before stalker was released I thought "Engine looks amazing.. trees look crap.. oh well, its only WIP screens I'm sure it will be fixed". Maybe I should of expected the trees to really look as bad as they do. I mean come on.... The textures for the trees are so bad their literally 1D, just loads of them effectively ducktaped together :-Q

Because nothing is what I consider as really finished. Once it is I'll post things somewhere like filefront, but nowhere is truely reliable, unless it happens to be a site I build and pay for.

Hey Ket, I just tried this out. Trouble that I have found with trying to improve any of the vegetation in stalker, and this mod is no exception. Is that due to xray's lack of anisotropic filtering everything at a distance looks kind of shimmery, i thinks that's the best I can describe it, it's not something I can capture in a screen-shot, as it only shimmers when you move the display around.

Does this make sense? have you noticed it aswell?

Shadow.

You can fix that "shimmer" with r2_tf_mipbias in user.ltx. Negative values (to -0.5) sharpen distant textures where positive figures (to 0.5) blur them.

Thats very stange. Not sure what may be doing that for you then. Perhaps something to do with the nvidia driver hacking AF in? Assuming you use a nvidia card that is.

Na shouldn't be that, I've got the latest forceware drivers and arn't forcing and AA or AF in the nvidia control panel.

It's prolly somthing to do with the shaders I got running, anyway, no big drama.

I suspect that this is due to absence of MipMaps in Ket's textures.

This "shimmer" can be caused by lack of mipmaps, certainly worth a try. I noticed it on those APCs I did, easily seen at range.

Not sure what program you use ket, but the latest dds plugin for GIMP includes the ability to generate mipmaps.

Hey ket, how're the things going? Any news on mipmaps, or is it OK like this? Final version?

Not a final version yet. Haven't worked on things for a while where I've been concentrating on my business, should be fully up and running around mid feb :D The textures are the ones stalker already uses, just "nicer", so assuming the original textures have mipmaps, theres no reason why these modified ones wouldn't have mipmaps.

I hope everything goes well with your business, I guess at the initial stages it'd require a lot more effort. I've already downloaded the mod. Have you noticed if it affects the performace in any way at all, being more developed visuals and stuff?

Haha, then how did you make them nicer?

I mean if you have loaded them in an editor, edited them and saved them (but without generating MipMaps) you have a perfectly good reason why they don't :P

Which editor did you use?

I only checked a couple of textures, but they didn't have mipmaps.

If you use GIMP the latest plugin supports mipmaps, and works well. When you save a dds file you get the option to generate mipmaps, so basically you would need to open each file and re-save it in Gimp. Or as nanderson mentioned, Paint.NET seems capable of doing the same thing.
