Particle Enhancement

Postby EggChen on 20 Sep 2008 23:39

Ok guys, this is just a thread for use with any of the PE mods, support, questions, requests, feedback, whatever you want. This forum is not as rigid as the GSC mod download section :D

Below is a post for each version of Particle Enhancement and the little weapon pack I did, seperate post created to avoid one massive post.

Particle Enhancement - Version 1.0

This mod enhances some of the particle effects in Stalker. I have adjusted all bullet impacts to throw out larger and more particles, roughly double the size of the vanilla effects. This is not too much, as vanilla effects were tiny!!

I am still getting to grips with the particle editor, which is very flexible. If
you have ideas for further improvement, or think other effects should be improved, please post in the discussion thread. Later versions could expand on the mod.

Example, I did not change the blood effects, but I could create more spray or use effects like the multiplayer headshot with chunky goodness...

Usage:
Anyone can use this in a compilation, credit would be nice.

Notes:
No new game is required, and will work on any patch.
Works with any mod that does not already have it's own particle file.
Oblivion Lost, SRP and AMK already mod the particle file, there may be others.

Particle Enhancement - Version 2.0

This mod enhances many of the particle effects in Stalker. I have now adjusted most of the anomolies, in addition to the bullet impacts, and a few little tweaks to the mutants. Generally the anomolies are harder to see, but not invisible. Please see screenshots, but remember these are moving effects and hard to capture!!

Features :
- Adjusted all bullet impacts to throw out larger and more particles.
- Increased size of blood impacts, but not density, so you get a finer spray effect.
- Generally increased muzzle smoke from all weapons, muzzle flash has not been changed.
- Increased smoke emitted with shells from weapons fire.
- Optional improved shotgun muzzle smoke effect (see notes).
- Increased Pseudogiant attack (see screenshots, "inner wave" is the size of original).
- Poltergeist is now just an air distortion rather than an electricity ball.
- Burner now emits swirling smoke when idle, blowout effect unchanged.
- Changed fruit punch to match the description from the book Roadside Picnic, including new light animations and textures. Thanks to Darius6 for the idea.
- Changed Electro idle state to emit blue fog from small flashes of light. This now matches the description from the encyclopedia.
- Gravi now has swirling leaves to represent the vortex.
- Whirlygig is a more powerful version of Gravi.
- Springboard is now a pulsating gravitational distortion.

Usage:
Anyone can use this in a compilation, credit would be nice.

Notes:
No new game is required, and will work on any patch.

To use the new shotgun smoke, you need to change the following line in the ltx files:

"smoke_particles = weaponsgeneric_shoot_00" to "smoke_particles = weaponsgeneric_shotgun"

Includes compatibility for Oblivion Lost & SRP minigun, and Gosuke's P90. Credit for those individual particles effects go to those guys, I just added them to my particle file.

Thanks:
Everyone who has given feedback and ideas on the forums, including Darius6, GoodOlVladwick, zombiedinosaur, Wolfehunter, taito_11 & Allianxor.

Special thanks to Utility, whose previous work on particles gave me the idea to try it out in the first place. Looking at some of his effects taught me how to do some of those I have now used.

Particle Enhancement - Version 3.0

This mod enhances many of the particle effects in Stalker. New in this version, almost
all effects are optional, and new particles have been added to some mutants. Anomolies
have been refined, and generally they are harder to see, but not invisible.

Please see screenshots, but remember these are moving effects and hard to capture!!

FEATURES :

BASE
- Adjusted all bullet impacts to throw out larger and more particles.
- Increased size of blood impacts, but not density, so you get a finer spray effect.
- Generally increased muzzle smoke from all weapons, muzzle flash has not been changed.
- Increased smoke emitted with shells from weapons fire.
- Includes P90, minigun and Arsenal Mod particles, so can be used by those merging mods.

ANOMALIES (OPTIONAL)
- Burner now emits swirling smoke when idle, blowout effect unchanged.
- Changed fruit punch to match the description from the book Roadside Picnic, including
new light animations and textures. Thanks to Darius6 for the idea.
- Changed Electro to emit blue fog from small flashes of light. Improved from version 2.
- Gravi now has swirling leaves to represent the vortex.
- Whirlygig is a more powerful version of Gravi, with a dust vortex.
- Springboard is a pulsating gravitational distortion, much softer and smoother transitions than version 2.
- Campfire without distortion to try and remove lag.
- Minefield with much smaller sticks that identify where a mine is.

MUTANTS (OPTIONAL)
- Increased Pseudogiant attack.
- Poltergeist is now just an air distortion rather than an electricity ball.
- Controller has dust, leaves and small electric discharges in large vortex around him.
- Cut-out zombies now have flies buzzing around them.

WEAPONS (OPTIONAL)
- Improved shotgun muzzle smoke effect.
- RPG now has its own unique explosion effect.

RESOURCES FOR MODDERS (OPTIONAL)
- Napalm Explosion - Very similar to barrel explosion, but removed the parts of barrel. Useful for napalm grenades, etc.
- Phosphorous Explosion - Explosion that shoots out projectiles, leaving a smoke trail which slowly falls to the ground.
- Blowout Wind - Can be used in env_ambient section for blowouts. Red wind, dust and debris in air.
- 3 Snow Effects - Can be used in env_ambient section for those using winter mod.

USE :
Anyone can use this in a compilation, credit would be nice.

NOTES :
No new game is required, and will work on any patch. Refer to Options.txt for details on how to remove an effect. This is only a case of deleting files, no editing required.

CREDITS :
- Includes compatibility for Oblivion Lost & SRP minigun, Gosuke's P90 and Arsenal Mod weapons. Credit for those individual particle effects go to those guys.
- AMK for the scripts which I used to add particles to the Controller and Zombie.

Error note :

Guys, the readme states the wrong particle names for the snow effects, they are actually :

_ecp\group_items\weather_snow_heavy
_ecp\group_items\weather_snow_medium
_ecp\group_items\weather_snow_light

Sorry

How effective is removing the distortion from the fires at getting rid of that odd studdery lag?

Well, I only got a very small amount of lag, but it seemed to clear that up nicely. Natvac was trying it out for ZRP, maybe he can mention how it affected the stutter on his machine.

Ok. I've just been pondering for a while on what would cause the odd studdery lag and how to fix it. I can have FPS into their 80s and still get that odd lag. Really gets irritating in the end.

I can send you the file I did for Natvac... purely vanilla, but with all fire campfire distortion removed, would be pretty easy to try it out.

Thanks m8 but I'll fire up the old particle editor myself and tinker with the fire distortion effect as TK uses a lot of enhanced particles anyway. Things look really rather flashy :P kina Crysis style, but without the unrealistic exaggeration :rr:

Well, I didn't notice a large difference in Pripyat after dark, but I think that the dynamic-light torches on several dozen NPCs along that north-south street where you enter from Red Forest can bog down my old system. The daylight seemed okay, though.

I will mention that Stancia 2 (NPP north side) seemed a lot smoother. Not one bit of lag when looking at distant teleports! :thumbright:

EggChen's tweak of the vanilla particles.xr file is now available from the STALKER download page on the Metacognix web site.

Any chance that you will include your kampfire work with your particle enhancement? Doesn't look like they can be merged.

You've lost me Grump, PE3 does include a "no-distortion" campfire effect already... it is optional, just requires using the enclosed kampfire.ltx.

If you mean the fading campfire mod, I guess so, I have added it to my own particle file, which includes a few tweaks over PE3 already.

Let me know what you mean and I'll see what I can do :thumbright:

No problem, most of the work is done anyway, I just need to check over my particle.xr for "test" stuff before I send it to you. Presuming the SDK works on Vista.
