How to mod a bow into the game

Postby Kaidonni on Fri Feb 12, 2010 10:38 pm

Seeing as how I've had absolutely no response on the GSC forums, I thought I'd try asking here. I've been thinking about creating my own weapon, but I'm not sure if this particular type would be possible. A bow, as in an archery or bowhunting bow (I am aware there might be differences in the design, etc, which should be a fun thing to think about), not a crossbow. I was excited about the presence of arrows for sale at a trader in one mod I was playing, but looking in the weapons files and altering the trader files revealed they were only for a crossbow. I fancy the other type of bow. Which is why I'm wondering if it's possible to model a weapon like that? Will the game engine allow for it? What about the arrows, too? It'd be odd if they simply disappeared and ended up like bullet holes, although that's a minor issue, and to be honest wouldn't matter much. I know there'd have to be a whole series of animations made for the weapon, and that might be one of the major issues also. Bows work by pulling back and all that (I can look up all the actual technical details, names, etc, later).

Howdy...sounds like a great deal of work to me. A bow is really cool in many games but I'm not sure about the reception you'll get from the Stalker community.
Military guns are so very popular.

Hi Kaidonni, It sure is a cool idea, an ingenious idea as far as ideas go  , but I'd agree with audioave10 that it would require a great deal of work. really a very great deal of work. If you want to go ahead with this idea, I don't think it could be done with one or in fact even with two, three people. It would require immense graphics works, physics, very clever scripting, and I'd assume it would require direct input into the DLL/engine files, which is beyond most the community, except those who are related with the development of Xray engine in one extend or another.

This is consideration under technical aspects of the required work for such an idea to be implemented, also, there's another another question, again audioave10 has brought up, which is whether the gaming community in general would like such a weapon to be included, but this can be answered by a quick polling, anyway. However, the fact remains that, at least as far as I can see, the technical work would require a very strong and dedicated team effort, and building such teams are not so easy to achieve nowadays.

This does not mean that you should give up, though, of course. You may find ways of teaming up with people who, say, may try to import/port some elements from other games and try to make them compatible with Xray/Lua stuff to achieve this target a bit easier, reducing the amount of the work required.

I would assume that if AMK didnt do it, then it must be nigh on impossible.

I`m sure someone in the know has thought about this and abandoned the idea.

Theres already a crossbow weapon mod for SoC, so theres no reason why you can't add a regular bow. I suspect you have recently watched Avatar though, haven't you? :p

Nope, nothing to do with Avatar. Besides, let's not get started on Avatar in relation to Stalker...imagine a Jake Sulley AI mod :)). If some people think grenades are too accurate in the hands of NPCs now, then a mod like that would make everyone run for the Brain Scorcher.

Nah, more to do with my novel writing, and learning about bow hunting. Just that the crossbow definitely works a certain way, and modding a bow in...not sure. I wouldn't want it to seem too much like a gun, with fast 'bullets.' I really imagined something that was animated to be like a bow (arms pulling back, etc), but only had one fire rate, but from what people have said, it might just be too much trouble to implement. I thought it could be simpler, and was merely an issue of the correct model, a well-tweaked series of animations, and some finely-tuned properties of the weapon and ammo itself so that it behaved like a bow (even if it wouldn't leave an arrow in an NPC or mutant, or even a tree).

It wouldn't be too hard to put a bow into stalker, you could probably use most of the stuff used for the crossbow mod to make your bow mod. Theres a video on youtube of the crossbow mod for SoC, but I can't seem to find it atm.

I probably wouldn't be able to even run Ket, SMP Runs at about 10-15FPS in unpopulated areas on Static lighting, and complete Minimum, and Static is DX8, I mean WTF! Gah. :( ](*,)

I still reckon your vid card needs a BIOS flash. I ran stalker on a 1950pro in a single core A64 system before with really high settings and it ran really good.
