ENB Series SSAO/SSIL

Postby Matt_B on 30 Oct 2008 18:47

Anyone tried the ENB series mod for SSAO/SSIL? Screens & link here: http://boris-vorontsov.narod.ru/ss_stalker_en.htm

In particular I'm wondering if the screen-space ambient occlusion could be used as a replacement for compiling lightmaps, so you'd have a workflow like this:

* quickly compile a map on draft settings

* fill in the lightmaps with pure white for example (to eliminate any hemi lightmap effect) & optionally downscale them from 1024x1024 to say 8x8 pixels

* enable SSAO mod

Also is there another shader mod that uses this technique?

did a bit of testing & concluded that SSAO is a crap rendering technique - it's view dependant so the dark shaded crevices of geometry change depending on distance, giving odd hdr-esque lightening/darkening effects as you move around concave objects, & the scale of the shading isn't fixed.

medium-high lightmap settings are the way to go then.

Thank you great info :thumbright:
Initially I was pretty impressed by the visuals, but as it appears to be, things have a greater dimension as you've found out.

It seems to work better in games like Deus Ex, though.

*wonders idly if the ENBSeries author is going to try applying his techniques to System Shock 2...*
