AMD strikes back

AMD strikes back

Postby Grump642 on 12 Jan 2009 01:19

3 months ago, when I built my new rig, AMD could not compete. Now, I like AMD for a lot of reasons. But I went with an Intel Wolfdale E8400. NOW AMD comes out with the Phenom 2.

I've been checking into the Phenom II and now I hear that at the end of this month Intel is going to lower prices (thanks AMD). At
Newegg: Intel quad-core Q9550 @ 2.83ghz - $319
AMD Phenom II 940 @ 3.0ghz - $275
The Intel seems to be from 4 to 15 frames better in games even at
a slightly lower clockspeed. The Phenom II does overclock nicely but
the Intel is still just a little better. If Intel DOES lower the price I'll
probably go that way because I've got to upgrade the mobo anyway. My Asus is too old and Asus will not issue a bios for the quad-core as an addon. The Phenom II does everything better but
it's more equal to the Q9400 @ 2.66ghz from Intel. I wanted it a
little bit faster. Still a good improvement.

In some games the E8600 at 3.33ghz still kicks ass. Easily OC's to
4ghz on air w/no extra voltage. I still think about this too.

I'm an Intel guy as well and that's good news as I'd also expect some price war for the benefit of the consumer. Having said that, this new processor is a remarkable achievement on the part of AMD, I need to acknowledge.

I had my E8400 Wolfdale up to 3.94Ghz with a Noctua hs+f with no heat problems. Brought the speed back down to 3.1 so I could run tight timings on the memory @ 1034

Make sure you heatsink is flat and use as#5. Even tho it is unlocked, do not forget your FSB( yeah, I know).

You sound like you really know how to overclock Grump. How about some tips? I don't know jack to be honest. I install, look at the BIOS like a deer in headlights, and play my games if they play. I can even oc in the Nvidia control panel but I don't know what settings to put. The RAM has WAY to many settings to mess with for instance without some knowledge and reading on the net just gets, well, overwhelming.

Damn it! I love AMD procs when they are on their game. And their new chipsets are supposed to be top notch also. Oh well, just built this rig. Wife said if I even mention building again for a year, I will be talking in a high squeeky voice!! :mozilla_surprised:

True, but I only have 2Gb memory and 1 4850. Another 4850 and 2Gb more memory wouldn't be building a new rig, now would it?? :-"

Most E8400 will hit 4Ghz on air, with a good cooler. And it's a lot cheaper.

E8400 - $165
E8500 - $189
E8600 - $269

I would pay the $24 upgrade to the E8500 but the E8600 is too much I think.
It seems I've moved this AMD thread to an Intel thread... :-\

Yeah, but what the heck. The 8500 was a lot higher then the 8400, till they came out with the 8600. The difference is only 160Mhz. Very small bump on the FSB. And they OC about the same.

](*,) well as a player and knowing very little about the tech workings regarding computers these pages have gone way over my head. :-?
I've got to upgrade but the guy in the shop said I might as well just buy a whole new machine and be done with it.
I like AMD, I've always used/had AMD's my wifes machine has an Intell in it and it's noisy, and pushes out way more heat than mine.
it's all so :-\
looks like I'll end up throwing a couple of grand (AU$) into a new machine in the not to distant future
