Hardware Habit

Hardware Habit

Well, I'm playing the game: "I need new stuff again" ...
So far UPS will be busy this week:
http://www.geil.com.tw/products/showGallery/id/118

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824001379

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835118004

plus some Artic Silver 5 and an Asus DVD-Rom optical drive.
Next...a video card but not sure what I want yet. From actual user reviews I find that the GTX 470 isn't as hot running as the test sites stated unless you leave
everything as default. Owners are setting their fan at 60% and it runs only a little more temp than their current cards. It's that or the 5850 but I'm seeing alot
of RMA's (its hard to judge whether its poor cases and user noobs, or a real problem). Here, the two are close in price with the GTX 470 being a little better.
ATI's vendors still worry me and many don't provide a long-term warranty. I like EVGA's & XFX's warranty. Still looking-Chime in if you want.

Most manufacturers over here offer better warrenties than for NV cards. Try looking at Asus, Powercolor and HIS branded ATi cards. They all offer good cover. I want to play the same game as you, but can't justify £230 on a 5850.... yet. I also need a new SATA DVD-RW, but my niece has a birthday soon I need to drop £50 so don't want to see £70 (including DVD-RW) vanish in mere seconds :p

Samsung looks really great, audioave10; Zalman cooler is not any worse, either. You're going for the kill, as it seems. :thumbright:

PS: I see Ket has a valid point about the warranties offered on this side of the Atlantic.

What a card! :thumbright:
So we're lucky as well, so that we can hear the first-hard reviews of it soon from someone who understands hardware and plays games very good, someone more trustable unlike professional reviews who lean toward the advertising money.

After reading the forums and technical sites for 6 months, I had to go Nvidia.
No regrets, and it will be this way until ATI start supporting the game developers with test runs & drivers.
Nvidia's CEO is truly a dickhead, but I want the card. I strongly support AMD however.
None of these companies are angels.

Out of the two though, ATi are the lesser of two evils. ATi actually offer a lot of support to game devs and throw quite a bit of money at them to make sure games get coded well for their hardware, but even after that for some reason the devs still give ATi the finger and I know for fact ATi do more to help devs than nvidia do.

I actually heard that one of the latest drivers of nvidia caused problems for my friend when he wanted to play Arma 2. No idea what version it was but im pretty sure it caused a problem. Well latest could be old now as that was a long while ago.

Although I support ATI more as their cards are cheaper for me and better then the price I can get nvidia. I still love nvidia more for certain aspects that ATI cant run certain games due to driver problems (Stubbs, UFO after series on latest drivers).

I've never had any serious driver problems with ATi. After spending a good amount of time on both the red and green sides, I found nvidias drivers to be much worse than ATi drivers. nvidia drivers love to BSOD systems for absolutely no reason, screw with image quality for better FPS (read: reduce image quality), have abysmal 2D support (can't play theme hospital.. BOOO!), and a whole hoast of other driver problems. As for the red side, I can't recall a single driver bug that actually prevented me from doing anything I wanted to.

Very strange. When I had nvidia I could run theme hospital. Well I think I played it on nvidia. Can't remember so long ago.

I did get those strange random bsods though. It even bsod me after I changed to ATI with the same nvidia problem. Luckily that fixed it after a windows reinstall and only got one bsod with my ATI card right now.

my nvidia card also liked to overheat stopping me from playing STALKER and such. But never had I had so many problems you had ket.

But I still do believe nvidia do better drivers then ATI. I just get a few games I can't play on ATI but I believe I can on nvidia. But I still love my ATI card :D

The Nvidia Physx thing is old news. That doesn't matter much to me because regardless of Windows 7 abilities, I would never have both an ATI driver plus a Nvidia driver on the same PC. That seems problematic. The best explanation of ATI problems comes from Ray Adams who created Rivatuner and is the base author for
MSI Afterburner since he has to deal directly with both GPU makers. One of the most awesome threads I've ever read. Explains away most of the fanboyisms and
gets down to actually dealing with the driver teams at each company. I'm going to look for this thread again.

I'm no fanyboy, just pointing out nvidia do a lot of crap thats downright unacceptable by any standard. Speaking of ATi though, I got my first BSOD with their drivers and its a big one - atikmpag.sys. Basically, whenever I enable CF and restart the system, boom, that BSOD hits like a whirlwind. No apparent fix as of yet. I'm going to go slam a couple ATi driver writers in a support ticket with ATi. See if that makes them take their thumbs out their arses.
