Windows Update (malfunction) ALERT: KB940510 -Beware

Postby Nightwatch on 26 Feb 2009 17:22

I've just heard (or received a WARNING) from a friend of mine who works as an IT in a fairly large business that new windows Update is offering to install an update to Windows system (it was VISTA in his case, but it could go to XP as well) an update:

KB940510

This update, as MS puts it, will neutralize any software that may pass/escape through the Software Activation Process, but my friend warned that it also affected their legitimate software, and now they are struggling on the phone with MS.

SO be warned. It's up to you to decide what to do.

Thanks for the heads-up, Nightwatch.

Since MS wants to ensure their revenues, looking into turning software licensing into a subscription-based system, this defensive update is an understandable DRM extension.

I'm not very happy with the prospects of the future.

Yup, well put, right on target. :thumbright:

It's sad to see that while software developers who actually create the material are "being employed" and put under strain of facing redundancies at any time and being by peanuts meanwhile, when compared with the annual profits of Microsoft, the owners of Microsoft enjoy the wealth that would make even the ancient kings go green with envy -- a wealth earned on the sweat of software developers. And this seems still not enough for them. Shame on you Microsoft. [-X :protest:

Nice to know, thanks. I have had a couple KB's crash my system in the past. That's why I do not delete the uninstallers for at least a week.

Hmm.. good question, I don't know if Windows giving different numbers to the same upadtes in 32 and 64 bit versions.
But, as a rule of thumb, I first set my downloads to "inform me but do not download or install without my permission" (may not be in exact wording, but you know what it is) and then, when I allowed the download , I check the list by right clicking on each and every offered piece of update and click on "view update." Then it says what the update is. They sometime try to disguise the things like double-skinned politicians, so you need to be awake to "rounded-up wordings" as well, lol. :D

I also do the "inform me first" thing. I don't want Microshaft to make decisions for me.

Thanks. I'll change my settings as well. Well, when I get home next week. I'm in West 'By God' Virginia at the moment for the wife's parents 50th. Fun, fun, fun (and cold, cold, cold).

I turn autoupdate off, period. Then disable the service for good measure. MS have a nasty habit of silently slipping things onto your system that override your update settings, that is, unless you disable the update service itself.
