Building a new PC? Look here first.

I would agree that older SSD's had these problems, and some still do. However, Intell SSD's and those using Indilinx controllers have gotten past these earlier problems. The good news is that most of the big names are using Indilinx controllers now, and by the end of this year, firmware updates will enable Trim. This software allows a SSD to return to almost new performance.

Edit-- I would stay away from anything using Samsung controllers tho. That includes most OEM installed SSD's. Garbage, with no way to upgrade firmware.

I still wouldnt use SSDs for important data atm. Fugger "upgraded" to SSDs on extremesystems, the forums are more unreliable than ever unfortunately, and their intel SSDs hes using.

Is he running a Raid? I have heard of problems doing that with all SSD's. OCZ does make a SSD that comes with Raid support. You are right that they are not what they will be. However, I would not hesitate to use them for a boot drive. Guess I don't consider Windows critical? :))

Okay I have an idea of what video card to get but I am still confused in what to look for in a sound card. As I said before I want one that will let me record sound in videos while letting me use my microphone to talk to other people. My current one which is a realtek won't let me do this because I believe its the stereo mix being greyed out so I can't lower it.

I also want to buy a video capture card to record videos off my gamecube, xbox 360 and so on and don't know what a good one is.

Edit:
For video card I believe I have finally decided in what to get. It is this:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/175989
The Sapphire HD 5750 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI Display Port Out PCI-E Graphics Card
Better then my current and it can run DX11. Trying not to spend too much and this card seems to fit what I want. Is this a good choice?

That looks like a great video card. Ket can give you ideas about a good sound card in Britain. :thumbright:

That vid card isn't bad, but you may want a 4870 instead, not DX11 obviously, but for the same money you get a card that should perform better at higher resolutions. If you really want a 5750 though, I recommend this one; http://www.ebuyer.com/product/178941# bit more expensive but it should OC much better. As for sound cards, did you look at that review for the Xonar DX?

Thanks guys.
Got the card ordered yesterday so I will have it next week. Was heading for that card as it appears to be the cheapest but still good and I can use DX11 if I feel like looking at good graphics while I play. I thought sapphire was the best out of these?

Nope didn't get round to reading it. I try reading it later today when im more wide awake and when I can find it.

Sapphire used to be ok, these days their more like the scourge of the graphics card segment. Asus, Powercolor, Gigabyte, XFX, all of these are better than Sapphire. Oh, and about DX11 "capable" hardware, just because it advertises it on the box, doesn't mean the card has enough muscle to handle DX11 properly. Sadly, I think this will be the case with the 5750, which is why if you really do want it, make sure you grab the one Asus offer as it should OC the best giving you maximum return for your investment.

ket,

Thanks for the recommendations on Intel and AMD systems. Unfortunately, the motherboard recommends are getting a little long in the tooth and some are tough to find. Can you update your Intel recommended motherboards, at least for the grade just above economy? A comparable AMD board would also be nice to have. Thanks!

I want to pull the trigger on parts for two new systems this weekend, but am drowning in reviews and evaluations!

As an FYI, right now I'm leaning toward AMD and the ASRock 880GX Extreme3. They're getting some mad OC over at xtremesystems, so it appears to have potential as long as it's not DOA. Of course, I do NOT plan on using the onboard GPU unless it can couple with an external GPU. It being able to unlock cores is only icing on the cake, two cores should do me OK for now and an upgrade to x4 or x6 will only get cheaper over time.

I had an ASRock Dual-Sata a few years ago and it was very good. I've heard Asus actually makes them. Asus & Gigabyte are still the most wanted brands for
overclocking if you can find what you want at a good price. I have two Gigabytes now and love them.

Thanks audioave10. I'm not going to use a two-slot card, all of them seem to use proprietary fans :( I've had so very many video cards go bad due to fan failure that I want at least the ability to add a fan and not be dependant on the poor quality designed-in fan.

That said, my current list looks like:

$110: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139006
$110: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813157191
$140: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231281
$100: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103846
$160: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814121376

$620 + S&H

Looking for a best buy on Windows 7 64 bit now. Any reason to use the "home" edition? I never thought much of XP Home, so am thinking of 7 Pro.

(ETA) Just got a call to go to work, back later!

I really like your list...very nice.
The video cards I've had for the last 5 years have been the more expensive ones. I've always chose the dual-slot cards with the enclosed fan/cooler (stock) so I would
have the hot exhaust air leave the case. The following cards I have and/or have sold do have good quality fans which have never failed or even got real dirty. My large gaming cases have helped that I'm sure. These are probably more money than you want to spend. Maybe the lower cards have cheaper fans?
Nvidia Geforce GTS 640Mb...GTX 260 896Mb...GTX 275 896Mb...GTX 470 1.280Mb.
ATI Radeon X 850 XT-PE & x1800XT. all dual-slot and with great fans but I must admit - top-of-the-line or very near so also quite expensive
I just want to keep my case cool which will help extend the life of all components. In fact, even with a few systems sold to others, I can't recall a failure yet.
Obviously, the major enemy is always heat.

EDIT: What are you going to use as a CPU cooler...you will need one for OC'ing. Stock coolers are so bad nowadays I wouldn't even use one for stock clocks. I have a
stock Intel & a stock AMD and I can't even give them away.

I spent a lot of time last night looking at cpu coolers. I'm sticking with air, and the Thermolab Baram is leading my list at this time, http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/thbauncpucos.html

It isn't "the best" air cooler, but it's a good value for the money and weight. I'll need to add a low-noise/high volume 120mm fan but it should do the job!

Put a fan on it, and it should do more than enough. I'm actually kind of impressed by the design of that thing... but it IS pretty big. Almost as big as the insane contraption in my old Dell.

Well, I couldn't wait any longer (sorry, ket!). Hope I made some decent choices.

Also ordered the Baram X 2 and fans. Now looking around for Win7 Pro at a good price.

Not too bad. CPU is pretty crappy though, I would of gone for the Athlon II X4 and clocked the snot out of that. Its a bit cheaper too at $96. 4 cores at 3.4GHz+ easily trump 2 cores at 3.8GHz. More and more apps are taking advantage of more than 2 cores now. CPU cache is only really important if you do a lot of archiving or CAD work as any graphics muscle is purely down to the GPU with the CPU basically just sitting there twiddling its thumbs. Asrock tend to make naff mainboards as well.. personally I would of been eyeing up a Gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H 785G ($95), a Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X ($119), or a Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 790X ($125).

ED - on a seperate note if anyone wants advice on components drop me a PM, I'll likely see that easier than this thread as I don't pop in as often as I did.
