Install Problem

Postby EggChen on 14 Sep 2008 15:26

Hey guys,

I am getting random crashes in Red Forest with absolutely no logs being produced, so after investigating everything I could think of I re-installed the game. Clean install, then patched to 1.0005.

Anyway, everytime I install I get the following when I try to launch the game "xr.sound.dll is missing, reinstalling the application may help".

Wow thanks... but I just did that

Any ideas? SHOC is currently wiped from my PC, and my loss of interest in Stalker is almost complete, I may just install Bioshock and actually play a game for a bit!!

What (if any) mods are you using??? You could also have a bad sound driver or a bad installation DVD... it happens. I just had a XP Pro disk go bad on me this weekend....

This happens after a clean install, and with no mods installed.

Perhaps it is the disc. Anyone fancy e-mailing me their xrsound.dll file?

OK, I'm emailing it in a minute.

I just sent the xr.sound.dll. And, oops... audioave10 was faster than me. :) Hope it's the dll file only and so these will help.

Thanks guys.

For some reason, on the fourth re-install the soundfile appeared!!
Disc must be getting dodgy.... very dodgy.

My random crash still occurs in Red Forest, despite the reinstall, and I get no log anywhere to say why. I must have really balls'd something up!! The weird thing is I recompiled the all.spawn using the vanilla section for Red Forest in my attempts to determine where the problem is... anyway, when using that all.spawn I get an instant crash on loading a new game saying that one of the dead scientists has an invalid vertex ID. This is odd when it is vanilla values!!

To the three helpful chaps who sent me the dll file :

There are a couple of more things that can cause a bad install.... we mentioned the CD / DVD disc itself but a CD / DVD player that is having read problems can cause issues as well. And in rare instances a faulty stick of memory can give you headaches.... I have had all three of these happen to me before. They all occurred in different computers that I was installing a OS in... the one where the memory stick was breaking down gave me fits figuring it out!

This is not only a Shoc problem I've encountered it before on a other game, getting a new sound.dll file should help

Try using patch 1.0004 and BFA 1.0004. I bet STALKER will work perfect then :p

I'm on 1.0005 because I got a nice performance boost, plus my game is written for 1.0005. Though I am often tempted to convert it back to 1.0003 just to get grass shadows and fix the statistics bug that annoys me so much!!

Anyway the sound issue has now been fixed, and I think I have the crash licked as well, all is groovy :D

Edit: I'm also building on top of the ZRP, so much improved stability, except when I screw something up
