F.E.A.R. - First Encounter Assault Recon

I only played the first FEAR. Apparently the two expansions really have nothing to do with the origninal, so I'm ignoring them until I beat project origin, whenever it comes out.
Anyways, I was addicted to FEAR. That game had me hooked. Plus, hearing a replica yelling in french as you round-house him in the face was just an absolute BLAST!
That first time I played, when Fettel jumps out you and smacks you with the board, I had already unloaded a clip into his head thinking "AHHH! ANOTHER ENEMY! BLAST EM!"
Needless to say, I was PISSED when that whole clip didn't even hit em and a cutscene occured. I swear, there needs to rewards for having the reflexes of a crack monkey in some of these games.... Anyone else have a similar experience?

Nice graphics, story and "scare" effects.
A bit too linear for my preferences but enjoyable.

I had one incident right by the Fettle board smack.... the game had built up some decent tension with no enemies, just blood, moving lights and creepy noises...

So when that damn crow flew past, I quickly turned, one pistol shot and he was down... I swear I heard FPS Doug shout his catchphrase in the distance!!

Anyway, I also got a headshot on Fettel the first time he came at me with the board... I think your right, it should have gone "Game Over" and played an alternate ending or something!!

I've just finished a complete playthrough, and I have to say thanks Kany for inspiring me to play it again :thumbright:

It really is a great game, the combat has not been matched in any other shooter yet. I just love the brutality of it, especially the shotgun at close range, I think that is where Decane got his BB mod from!!

Dual pistols are my favourite weapon though, I carry them throughout the entire game.

Proximity mines are just evil in multiplayer, I used to drop one, then shoot a barrel to roll ontop of it, so it could not be seen :angry5:

As for the Penetrator, well just plain funny :geek:

I agree to the penetrator bit. Nothing is more fun than IMPALING someone to a wall. Thats why I loved the crossbow in Half-Life 2. And yes, who doesn't love shotgunning some asshole trying to round house you in multi-player :rr:

I played F.E.A.R. in April and May of 2007 -- after playing STALKER! -- with this to say to my friends:

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
I mentioned a few things in my first [email] post on the game: it made me sick [typical Lithtech engine mouse lag], had terrible graphics design, and it's an FPS on a rail.

Only the rail thing lightened up over the last third. I was still on a rail, but it got a little more complex.

I've finished the dungeon crawl. I'm done. Here are some thoughts I had during the game. I know there are too many for you to read, but I have to vent.
===================================================
Crashes: None, but one stuck situation required a reload of a previous save. That's where you take the slanted Half-Life lift back up to the top after blowing the four reactor cores; I got too close to the lift switch and it put me in it after the ride.

Only 10 named save games. And your "quick load" is not always the last "quick save". Copy protection that's poorly managed, with no marked "start" disk, and it violates Data Execution Prevention [probably due to SecuRom]. Loading times are okay, but the levels are not even as complex as those in Deus Ex.

Disconnects:

Can't open cabinets, can't search or move bodies. It feels like a blue-green Half-Life, what with the duct crawling and pipes bursting into flames as you get near.

What AI? The fact that they can leap railings? The grenade tossing is scripted. They never toss one when they need to flush you out. Tip: Expect a grenade in the face right after the game does a checkpoint save.

When you look down while climbing ladders, your knees are embedded in the wall. They pass through the rungs like they are not there.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me four times, Mapes, I must be playing FEAR, where one probably can't kill the bad NPCs when they are critical to the plot.

I jumped up on a duct to go around the machine gun turret when I was above it in the ceiling crawlspace. I walked on air! I couldn't get down into the hole until AFTER the cutscene with Mapes saying "I wonder what this button does...", when the turret drops down.

Exploit: If you walk over a weapon that you already have in your inventory, you'll pick up 10-25 units of ammo. If you toss your matching weapon, pick up the one you saw, then retrieve your original weapon, you'll get 25-75 units. Huh. Quick-save beforehand, though, 'cuz sometimes the weapon falls into the floor.

I don't know why the UN would outlaw the particle beam weapon. It seems pretty quick and humane to me, although the cries of pain of the newly-shucked skeletons are a bit disconcerting. What they should outlaw is the 10mm HV Penetrator. That puts bad guys in their place, pinned to the wall like a biology project bug.

Genevieve Aristiede (whatever) had TPS reports on her desk. Cute. As was Chachki's number next to the phone in a few places.

You just _know_ the baddies will toss a grenade into the elevator when the door opens on the different floors as you "escort" the brainless Barbie (tm) -- no, sorry, Alice Wade -- to the roof. It's okay. You might die, with all your armor and what-not, but she'll be just fine.

Hmm. Alice Wade's mouth isn't moving when she speaks on the roof (when our helicopter ride is shot down). But I can still hear her voice! Later, when she's dead, I thought "Nice blood bump-mapping on Barbie..."

I couldn't go higher than 199 health.

Moron. The game doesn't care that you put 18 rockets into the truck. It's scripted, don'tcha see, and will always crush you unless you run forward to the open window. And don't think you can stay in the jamb; the game will push you inside to keep you from going down the alley.

The phantom-of-the-opera "mimes" (that's what the Armacham elite force members look like) had the same voices as Fettel's mind-controlled soldiers. Hey, it's the same voices as the ones from Half-Life! "Squad! Pipe down!"

Fettel just kneels in front of me? What's the deal? Why do I have a pistol again? Okay, I shoot him in the knee -- and he dies. The knee's where his brain is, you know.

You can see your tiny feet over Fettel's head when you look down walking through him.

Tell me again why I have to destroy the place after Alma has gotten out? Hmm? It's _too late_, amigos.

It's gonna blow! Run for your life! ...But if you want to take your time, we understand. We can wait.

Great. Mama wants to kill me. She says she knows who I am, but that doesn't make any difference. Must kill her first, so I can get to the end of this crappy mind and body-control game. Heck, it's worse than the sarcophagus rides near the end of Half-Life 2.

Hey, Mama doesn't look a day over 16!

Wow! The elevator in the long-abandoned and wrecked apartment building works! Who's paying the electric bill here? Who oiled the motor? Why didn't they steal the copper wiring?

No, no, bad boy. You can't hide from the reactor blast front coming your way. We're scripting this, the way we took your guns away in Auburn. (Yeah, we got the idea from Half-Life. Great game, no?)

No. But I did laugh at the end. And Genevieve telling the Senator "the prototype was a success" was a good touch.

===================================================
Rating:

Four stars. Out of ten. The weapons were cool, and the baddies were fun to shoot at.

--Wait. Make that three stars. I am _so tired_ of flashlights that go dark in seconds.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
And STALKER was scarier, folks.

Started playing this again... I realized I haven't played this since I got my Radeon 4650 HD... so I got to play on Max Graphics for the first time ever... needless to say, I have been drooling out of the ears while killing replicas... Nothing is quite as fun as smacking a clone in the side of the head with a grenade and hearing him scream "Oh, SHIT!" Pop goes the weasel! :P

Anyways, I have to say, in retrospect, that this game sucks... lack of iron sights for aiming, exceedingly linear scripted gameplay, and cheesy stereo-typical horror stuff that just isn't that scary... the only reason I play this game is because the enemies are actually pretty smart (despite their constant radio broadcast), and offer a variety of different challenges... those ninjas are so damn cool... So yeah, the action is the only thing enjoyable about this game, but it is enough to keep it going!

I still play FEAR every now and then. I find it a nice change from STALKER. Funny thing is I liked the two expansion packs but hated FEAR 2 mainly because I hated the HUD. It seemed to block to much of my vision.
There is no social situation so serious that it can not be solved by the proper use of high explosives.
