LGA 1156

LGA 1156

Postby Grump642 on 26 Jul 2009 22:22

Ket, have you heard any rumors about this socket being very short lived? I have been hearing that it will change( within a year) to a NEW 1156B, incompatable with the 1156. And that the P55 chipset might not support future processors. Kind of like what happened when they first released the P4. Any rumors like this over your way?

I have read some concerns about this very possibilty but can't find
them now. I don't think there is enough solid info yet from Intel. I'll
be learning all I can before trusting any new socket format.

Socket 1156 is for the "new" i5 CPUs. Unless your the type of person who gets a major hardon for DDR3 then forget about socket 1156 completely. i5, as with i7, does not offer a significant performance improvement over a C2D or C2Q system in 90%+ of tasks. I'm not even considering getting a i7 system nevermind a i5 system due to these reasons, and because theres already talk of i9, the i7 successor. You can pretty much guarantee i9 will be a worthwhile investment (albiet expensive one) and it'll require a new socket. Just like the 423>478 fiasco and the 754>939 fiasco.

The real name to keep your ear to the ground for is "Sandy Bridge". It will be a 32nm part with intels AVX (Advanced Vector eXtension) instructionset tech as well as most likely introducing better power efficiency and reduction. This is what I would call i9, theres a lot of changes, but AVX tech may require a few extra pins on the socket.. enter LGA 1368 or whatever it may be.

That's important news. I was planning to jump to i7 wagon at some convenient time, but now I can wait for the i9.

i9 may be different to popular rumor and may be a few years off still, but bottom line: If you have a decent Phenom x4 or Quad system you can be assured you have a PC thats plenty powerful enough to last until i9, or at least until sandy bridge.

Nice. I have a decent Quad system, can upgrade the Q8500 later and add more high-speed RAM. I may skip i7 then. :D

Your Q8500 is fine, all it lacks vs. other quads is cache, for the most part you won't notice the smaller cache. You will only notice any real difference if you do a lot of archiving, stuff like that.
