Out initial information on another threat on this forum was correct about the Microsoft's abandonment of Windows 8 and a new release would follow in October 2014 (which was expected to be logically the Windows 9, in Microsoft's current naming protocol). So, here comes the Windows 10!
In an environment when all the (delusional) dreams gone sour and customers worldwide shunned the Windows 8 experiment, as the official figures showing Windows 8 only sold 15% -mostly as pre-installed on new machines- and most of those who received it have done everything to revert to Windows 7, Microsoft left the wounded Windows 8 behind in a blink of an eye and jumped so much and further away from it, so that it has now landed on Windows 10!
Well, numbers are just labels on this business, aren't they? They are not actually counting Protons or something like that, they could've easily said Windows 13 instead! What matters is not how much distance you put between the products "on ink, on the paper, on the package," but What really matters is the "actual" progress that have been achieved for the benefit of the customers, addressing the shortcomings of Windows 8. That still needs to be seen.
Initial views, in my opinion, area bit misty at the moment. There is a lot noise, as seen iPhone releases, but real Windows 10 will reveal itself slowly over the coming weeks.
We'll be updating this threat as new tangible information received on this matter.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has started the process of offering Windows 10 Technical Preview:
